He told me he doesn't even like the barbell....

Usually I would try to find articles written by people that are experts with decades of experience that I have a tremendous amount of  respect for…but most people aren’t familiar with them because the idea of working hard to achieve goals isn’t really thought highly of in today’s fitness industry and their concepts and training methods are kept out of mainstream fitness journalism.

So I did a google search- “Train like an athlete…”

I just randomly clicked on a few of the links from the first page.  They are mostly from resources I would never consider reading for any type of serious advice, but I was surprised about what I found.  None of the sites really offer any actual training program to follow, and some of the exercise recommendations are a tad silly to be considered for a highly effective program, BUT the overall picture is what I’m getting at.

A Dating website

A site with the title “Hot Body Training”

Something from “Squidoo”

“World’s Toughest Workouts”

Some of you train for performance, but a lot of it is aesthetics.   What a lot of people do not understand is that if you train for performance and base your goals around improving physical abilities- then all those visual goals you have become a product of your increased work capacity.

If you have any doubt, look at athletes in almost any sport.  An NFL running back, an Olympic 400m sprinter, a college basketball player, etc. etc. etc.  I can guarantee their progress isn’t measured by how big their arms look in the mirror after blasting those biceps with hammer curls, preacher curls, straight bar curls, reverse curls, and do not forget the behind the back wrist curls.

Forget about the mirrors, forget about the scale, and focus on how you are progressing with your physical ability.  Did you Squat more this week than you did two weeks ago?  Can you run faster? Jump Higher?  Do more pull ups? DO A PULL UP?  This is how you measure your progress.

Do your own research.   Let me know what you find out.  Thoughts?  Post to comments.

I am impressed, I have to say. Really seldom do I come across a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your article is outstanding; the issue is something that not many people are talking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to it.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  10. Brant SminkJanuary 3, 2011 at 2:51 am

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  12. frank kernJanuary 9, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I’m still reflecting more than the conflicting points of view, but I’m tipped heavily toward yours. And in any situation, which is what is so terrific about modern-day democracy as well as the marketplace of ideas on-line.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod???¨º?¨¨s. It functions nicely, but isn???¨º?¨¨t as quickly as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. Should you occasionally plan on using the web browser that???¨º?¨¨s not an issue, but in the event you???¨º?¨¨re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod???¨º?¨¨s bigger screen and far better browser could be essential.
