If you attended any of the evening classes throughout the winter, you probably met Suzy and know she is a marathoner.  I’ve been waiting all winter to see how heavy squats, deadlifts, pull ups, and WODs would impact her running times.  Here’s her testimonial:

“I came to Crossfit Fairbanks to do the things I would never do on my own…which is basically anything but running. For 10 years, I’ve enjoyed marathons and ultra distances and my love for it convinced me to try something new- who doesn’t want to improve?


Two things changed in preparation for my 26th marathon: amount of mileage and the addition ofCrossfit. I reduced my running by about 50% to a 30-50 mile per week schedule and instead focused on the programming Kane provides- heavy strength training combined with intense WODs that will always keep your body guessing.

Results? Okay, here’s where I could brag about JFK50 and Boston qualifying; however, any runner will value and identify more with a feeling of strength in the final miles.  At the point where I usually die (looking at you mile 23), I was able to speed up and solidify a negative split and over 3 minutes improvement from my former personal record set in 2008.

If you want to read more about the race, check out Suzy’s blog Run 51.  She has blogged about every marathon she’s completed.  Her goal is to complete a marathon in each state, plus Washington D.C.  –before she turns 40.  She has already completed 26, and has 25 to go.  I think that’s an awesome goal, and I have faith in her to complete it.  I’m honored to have helped her along the way.

I am always greeted with skepticism and hesitation every time an endurance athlete walks through the door to inquire about the benefits of our program in relation to their sport.  Most are not willing to accept that out training program can improve their performance.  The few that do decide to give it a try often lack the patience or commitment to stick to it and see it through.

Suzy is living, breathing, and running proof that you do not have to sacrifice other very important physical attributes(strength and power are prime examples) to excel at endurance sports.   I don’t know any other endurance athlete’s firsthand that can put up running numbers like her, and at the same time keep the ability to do pull ups, a 2 x bodyweight deadlift, a 1.5 x bodyweight squat, and an insanely high anaerobic work capacity.

    Chena River Run: 21:49.9. Miserably cold day for running. Was hoping for sub 20, so this was disappointing.
